Garrett's Hypotonia Story

This is the blog about my son, Garrett. He was born in 2003 with hypotonia, but he does not have a diagnosis. His hypotonia seems to be mild to moderate.

Garrett's Current Skills

I gave up on trying to keep Garrett's website up to date. There are too many steps to start a new journal entry on the site, so that always gave me an excuse not to update. The steps took me all of 1 minute to go through to start writing a journal entry, but it was enough of an excuse. So here I am with a blog instead. Hopefully I will be better about updating what Garrett is up to these days.

Where to start??? I guess I'll just tell you what he is doing right now at the age of 3 years and 1 month old. You can take a look at his website to get an idea of what he was like prior to age 2. From age 2 to age 3 you won't find much written on the site because Rylan was born.

Garrett is now sleeping in a twin bed with no bed rails!! We bought him a twin bed with trundle and had him on the trundle since last summer. I decided to try him on the regular bed a few months ago. He fell out a few times at first, but he hasn't fallen out in a long time. He would probably still be in his crib if I hadn't kicked him out to move Rylan in!!

We are attempting to potty train Garrett. I'm not sure he can really sense when he needs to go or is able to hold it for very long, if at all. He likes to talk about pee pee and poo poo all the time, but it's mostly just talk. I do put him on the potty throughout the day, and he does go on the potty about 60-70% of the time. I'm not pushing it anymore, just taking him every hour, and if he goes, great, if not, oh well. A rewards system just doesn't work with him. I don't think he understands the sticker chart idea, and he threw the m&m's across the bathroom. He loves flushing the toilet and washing his hands, so if he does go potty, I let him flush the toilet and wash his hands for about 5 minutes. He mostly plays in the water rather than washing his hands, but I'm hoping he'll catch on that he gets to play in the water if he goes potty and gets a boring ole hand wash for sitting on the potty. I'm not stressing it. He'll figure it all out eventually.

This is getting really long, so I'll just list the other things he's doing now:
- Sayins Mommy and Daddy
- Goes down the slide by himself (needs help climbing the ladder up the slide though)
- Walks on grass without falling
- Plays with Rylan
- Knows most animals by sight (the common ones like dog, cat, monkey, bear, bird, etc.) but can't say what most of them are...he tells you what sound they make instead. For example if he sees a bird, he'll say tweet tweet. He tries to say bird, but it comes out "bu".
- Follows one-step commands most of the time

That's all I'm going to write for now. Hopefully I'll be back again soon!
